The McAllen Police Department serves the McAllen, Texas, metro area with a population of approximately 130,000. They employ around 272 sworn officers and about 380 total employees. The city’s proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border and the Mexican city of Reynosa, with its large population, contributes to the fluctuating size of the city due to commuter traffic.
According to the recent report released by the McAllen Police Department, four disciplinary actions were taken against police officers between January 1, 2023, and August 25, 2023. Due to the civil service provisions in Texas legislation, only suspensions or higher disciplinary actions can be made public.
2 McAllen Police Officers Disciplined for Time and Attendance Matters
On January 16, 2023, Officer Eric A. Gomez, assigned to the 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift, called in sick due to not feeling well. Later that evening, around 11:30 PM, an on-duty supervisor observed Officer Gomez leaving a local bar.
As a consequence of the incident, Officer Esquivel received a one-day suspension. The suspension was in effect from 10 p.m. on March 24, 2023, through 10 p.m. on March 25, 2023.
On or around February 24th, 2023, Officer Javier Robles Jr. requested leave, citing an unforeseen family emergency. However, subsequent information revealed that Officer Robles utilized his sick leave for personal matters, specifically to assist in the transportation of his family members from Brownsville, Texas.
As a consequence of the incident, Officer Esquivel received a one-day suspension. The suspension was in effect from 10 p.m. on March 26, 2023, through 10 p.m. on March 27, 2023.
2 McAllen Police Officers Disciplined for Vehicle Accidents
On January 22, 2023, Officer Cynthia M. Gonzalez was operating her assigned police motor vehicle (Unit #2126) while on duty. During her response to a Call-For-Service (CFS), Officer Gonzalez unintentionally collided with a stationary pipe near the intersection of East La Vista and North Cynthia Ave. This incident resulted in significant damage to the undercarriage and front end of unit #2126.
As a result of the incident, Officer Gonzalez received a one-day suspension. The suspension was in effect from 6 a.m. on July 1, 2023, until 6 a.m. on July 2, 2023.
On February 11, 2023, Officer Natasha F. Esquivel was involved in a motor vehicle collision while on duty, operating her assigned department vehicle, Unit #2133. During her response to a call for service, Officer Esquivel proceeded southbound into the intersection of North 29th Street and West Buddy Owens disregarding a red signal light. As a consequence, her vehicle collided with another motor vehicle traveling eastbound in the intersection.
As a consequence of the incident, Officer Esquivel received a one-day suspension. The suspension was in effect from 10 p.m. on May 6, 2023, through 10 p.m. on May 7, 2023.
Only 4 McAllen Police Officers Discplined
