A Fort Worth police officer is being investigated for allegedly assaulting a First Amendment auditor, prompting concerns about police conduct.
Forth Worth Police Officer Allegedly Assaults Auditor
A Fort Worth police officer is under investigation following allegations of assault during the arrest of Carolyn Rodriguez. The incident, captured on video, has raised serious questions about the conduct of Officer Matthew Kruger and the use of force during the arrest.
The video begins with Rodriguez approaching two female officers, questioning them about the towing of vehicles from a parking lot. Shortly after, Officer Kruger per audio from Rodriguez’s live stream, instructs her to move across the street. Rodriguez requests more information about the situation, to which Kruger responds by warning her that she will be arrested if she does not comply. Rodriguez makes another plea for information, after which the camera suddenly drops, and sounds resembling snoring can be heard.
The aftermath of the incident is captured in Rodriguez’s booking photo, which shows injuries that some might interpret as signs of a severe assault. Rodriguez was charged with four offenses: False Alarm or Report, Interference with Public Duties, Resisting Arrest, Search, or Transport, and Evading Arrest or Detention. While the video does not capture the arrest itself, it is known that at least three officers were present during the incident.
Rodriguez’s defense attorney, CJ Grisham, is a well-known advocate for First and Second Amendment rights. Grisham has released a video discussing the incident, suggesting a pattern in Officer Kruger’s use of force.
WFAA reports the Ft. Worth Police Department has initiated an internal investigation into the allegations; however, it stopped short of naming Officer Kruger. In a brief statement reported to WFAA, the department emphasized their commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring the public that they are taking the allegations seriously and that appropriate action will be taken based on the investigation’s findings.
This incident adds to a growing list of concerns regarding police conduct and the use of force, prompting calls for increased scrutiny and reform within the department.
