The San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) is marking a significant milestone as they celebrate the first anniversary of the introduction of Police Service Specialists (PSS) within the department. These specialists have been instrumental in enhancing community policing and optimizing resource allocation.

A year ago, SMPD established a five-person team of PSS, whose primary responsibilities include managing non-emergency calls, compiling reports, gathering evidence, and promptly responding to community calls. By delegating these responsibilities to PSS members, sworn officers have been able to refocus their attention on addressing higher-priority crimes, ultimately ensuring a higher level of attention and satisfaction for all citizens.

Daniel Gaitan, a Police Service Specialist at SMPD, emphasized the vital role they play in maintaining public safety and providing support to those in need by responding to various non-emergency calls on a daily basis. This demanding position requires a high level of professionalism, customer service, decision-making, and de-escalation skills, as well as the ability to handle individuals with mental health or memory issues.

Olivia Lyons, another SMPD Police Service Specialist, highlighted the critical decisions they make on a daily basis, particularly regarding reported incidents, appropriateness of calls, and assessing the impact of mental health on the situation. Despite the challenges they face, including navigating calls with irate individuals and situations where their ability to assist is limited, the satisfaction of serving the public and making a difference in their city makes the job fulfilling for these specialists.

Furthermore, the specialists at SMPD continue to focus on developing their unit by constantly learning and refining their position to stay abreast of emerging trends and public information, ultimately leading to a better connection with the community and an enhanced ability to serve them with a more developed mindset.

Assistant Chief Brandon Winkenwarder commended the dedication and adaptability of the Police Service Specialists, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to enhancing community safety and satisfaction. As the role of these specialists continues to develop and adapt, its impact on public safety and community relations is expected to grow significantly, shaping a bright future for San Marcos.
