Cameron County Sheriff’s Office Employee Arrested for Impersonation
A civilian employee of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, Charles Hoskins, has been charged with false identification as a peace officer following an incident where he allegedly posed as a sheriff’s deputy to obtain a discount at a local store.
On June 13, 2024, Charles Hoskins, 46, was at Academy Sports and Outdoors in Brownsville, Texas, when he reportedly misrepresented himself as a deputy sheriff. Wearing a black shirt featuring the Cameron County Sheriff’s badge on the chest and “SHERIFF” on the sleeves, Hoskins requested a law enforcement discount at the store. According to an affidavit filed by Lt. Edgar Rivera of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department, this act misled the store’s cashier and other customers about his status as a peace officer.
The incident first came to light when Captain Alvaro Guerra of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office received information about Hoskins’ actions. On June 13, 2024, at approximately 4:30 PM, Capt. Guerra informed Lt. Rivera of the situation. The incident reportedly occurred earlier that day at the Academy Sports and Outdoors store, where a civilian employee identified himself as a deputy sheriff while wearing attire bearing the Sheriff’s Office insignia. .
Lt. Edgar Rivera went to the Academy Sports and Outdoors store located at 4305 Old Hwy 77 in Brownsville, Texas. Upon arrival, he spoke with the store manager and requested to review the surveillance footage. Per Rivera, The footage showed Charles Hoskins wearing a black long-sleeve shirt with the word “SHERIFF” on the sleeve and the Cameron County Sheriff’s badge on the chest. Rivera also obtained a copy of the sales receipt for Hoskins’ transaction, which was dated June 13, 2024.
Rivera interviewed the cashier who handled Hoskins’ transaction. The cashier confirmed that Hoskins asked for a first responder discount, later specifying it as a law enforcement discount. She recalled that Hoskins appeared nervous and that another customer in line questioned his status as a deputy. The cashier admitted that she did not follow the usual verification procedure because Hoskins was wearing what appeared to be a sheriff’s uniform, which she took as an indication that he was indeed a deputy.
An additional witness, a current employee of the Sheriff’s Office, recognized Hoskins and knew he was not a peace officer. This witness described the sequence of events in detail. The witness confronted Hoskins, who initially claimed to be a “Captain” with the Sheriff’s Office. When pressed further, Hoskins changed his story, saying he was a “boat captain” and later admitting he was a retired military personnel. Despite multiple questions about his credentials, Hoskins eventually confessed that he was not a peace officer.
On June 14, 2024, Rivera conducted a query with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) to verify Hoskins’ credentials. The query confirmed that Hoskins does not hold a peace officer or detention officer license in Texas.
Hoskins went before a Cameron County Magistrate on June 18, 2024.
