A student-led walkout protest focused on opposition to federal immigration enforcement activity took place Monday afternoon, February 2, 2026, near the intersection of RM 967 and FM 1626 in Buda. Students from Moe and Gene Johnson High School and other area campuses gathered along the roadway to express concerns related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions and broader immigration policy issues.
According to city and county officials, the demonstration was organized as a form of political expression and was described by local leadership as a lawful exercise of constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.
Initial Law Enforcement Response and Traffic Safety Measures
The protest prompted a coordinated response from the Buda Police Department, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hays County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5.
Authorities stated that officers were notified by a Hays County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer assigned to Moe and Gene Johnson High School that students were conducting a walkout protest along RM 967. Law enforcement personnel were dispatched to provide pedestrian safety and traffic control at the intersection, which officials described as a large and heavily traveled roadway.
Sheriff’s Office Explains Safety-Related Assistance
In a statement from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, deputies reported responding to an initial request for assistance from Buda police related to traffic and pedestrian safety. Deputies stated that children were observed standing on a concrete median in the intersection, which they characterized as unsafe given traffic conditions.
The sheriff’s office stated that deputies assisted Buda police in clearing students from the median in order to reduce the risk of injury. According to the statement, this response was limited to safety-related measures and did not involve enforcement action related to the content or purpose of the protest.
Deputies later responded to a second request for assistance after Buda police reported an assault at the same location. The sheriff’s office confirmed that Buda police are the lead agency investigating that incident.
Physical Altercation Involving an Adult and a Minor
According to Buda police, just before 3 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection for a reported fight in progress. Upon arrival, officers were advised that a verbal argument had occurred between a female juvenile standing on the sidewalk and an adult male seated in a vehicle.
Police stated that the verbal exchange escalated into a physical altercation involving multiple individuals. Officers identified both primary parties involved in the incident. The department reported that no arrests have been made and that the matter remains under active investigation.
Buda police also stated that officers continued to respond to traffic issues and minor vehicle accidents in the area during the protest response.
Statements From City and County Leadership
Buda Mayor Lee Urbanovsky issued a public statement acknowledging the incident and confirming that video footage of the altercation has circulated widely on social media, accompanied by differing claims and interpretations.
Urbanovsky stated that Buda police have identified the adult male involved and have collected a statement from him. He further stated that the department is working with the school district to obtain witness statements and video evidence from students who were present. The mayor described the matter as emotionally charged and urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra separately described the walkout as a lawful demonstration and confirmed that the conduct of an adult toward a minor during the protest is now the subject of an active criminal investigation.
Becerra stated that he has been in communication with law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office. According to his statement, Buda police proactively engaged prosecutors, and two experienced assistant district attorneys have been assigned to work directly alongside investigators. He emphasized that adults bear a responsibility to exercise restraint, particularly in situations involving minors, and stated that intimidation or violence directed at children during a lawful protest has no place in constitutional governance.
Investigation Status
Officials acknowledged that the investigation is ongoing and that evidence review is continuing. As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made, and the District Attorney’s Office has not announced whether charges will be filed.
