A Hamilton County resident has filed a formal petition asking a district judge to remove Sheriff Jason Bradley Boulton from office, alleging official misconduct connected to an illegal prescription-drug scheme and a failure to enforce Texas law. According to the Petition for Removal, filed October 13, 2025, by Chad Renfro, the sheriff is accused of participating in and failing to stop an unlicensed drug-distribution operation allegedly run by Erika Bedell, a Hamilton County woman arrested earlier this year for selling unapproved GLP-1 compounds such as semaglutide and tirzepatide without medical or pharmacy credentials. The petition claims the sales occurred both within Hamilton County and beyond.
Alleged Affair and Illegal Drug Purchases

The filing alleges that from February through September 2025, Sheriff Boulton was involved in an extramarital relationship with Bedell and “knowingly purchased, possessed, and allegedly used” the unapproved weight-loss drugs without a prescription. The document asserts that Boulton purchased the drugs on multiple occasions—at least five times—allegedly paying by personal check, according to statements attributed to Bedell’s husband, Trampus Chew, in a media interview.
The petition further states that Boulton introduced deputies from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office to Bedell so they could obtain the same unapproved substances for themselves. It claims he used his position of authority to assure deputies that the drugs were legal. The filing points to several reports of citizens becoming violently ill after taking the drugs Bedell sold, citing news coverage, a public safety warning issued by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, and ongoing social-media discussions surrounding the case.
Failure to Enforce the Law
Renfro argues that Sheriff Boulton violated multiple duties imposed by Texas law by intentionally refusing to intervene in Bedell’s illegal operation. The petition states that Boulton failed to stop the drug sales, failed to investigate the activity, and failed to arrest Bedell despite allegedly knowing the conduct was unlawful. It emphasizes statutory requirements that compel a sheriff to preserve the peace, prevent crime, arrest offenders, and notify a magistrate of offenses within their jurisdiction. According to the petition, Boulton’s alleged inaction was deliberate and motivated by his personal relationship with Bedell and continued access to the drugs, conduct Renfro characterizes as “corrupt neglect of duty.”
Request to Remove and Suspend the Sheriff
The filing asks the court to order Sheriff Boulton to appear and answer the allegations, and to temporarily suspend him from his duties while the matter proceeds. It seeks his removal from office and requests that an interim official be appointed to carry out the responsibilities of the sheriff’s office. The petition also asks that court costs be assessed accordingly. Renfro asserts that the allegations are supported by witness statements from deputies, interviews with community members, communication records, and additional documents that he says will be presented at trial.
