Federal Correctional Officer Sentenced to 10 Years for Drug Trafficking at Beaumont Prison

By

A former correctional officer assigned to the Federal Correctional Complex in Beaumont has been sentenced to a decade in federal prison after admitting to trafficking narcotics connected to the prison facility. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas, 22-year-old Martel Devante Gilliam of Beaumont was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison on March 11, 2026. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone after Gilliam pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Federal officials said the conviction stems from a 2024 investigation that identified Gilliam as a suspected source of illegal drugs entering the prison environment. Authorities stated that Gilliam had been employed as a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) in Beaumont at the time of the investigation.

Drug Discovery During Vehicle Search

Court records indicate the investigation escalated on March 8, 2024, when Gilliam reported for work at the prison complex. During routine security procedures, a narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs in Gilliam’s vehicle during an open-air sniff conducted by authorities. Following the alert, investigators searched the vehicle and discovered a significant quantity of narcotics and related items. According to information presented in court, the search uncovered approximately 125 grams of methamphetamine, 28 grams of cocaine, and about 459 grams of synthetic marijuana. Investigators also located vacuum-sealed packages containing tobacco and marijuana, along with approximately $5,700 in cash and a pistol inside the vehicle. Federal prosecutors stated the evidence supported allegations that Gilliam was involved in distributing drugs connected to the prison environment.

Investigation Conducted by Multiple Agencies

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Prisons, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Federal authorities said the investigation focused on identifying and disrupting the flow of illegal drugs into correctional facilities. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell James for the Eastern District of Texas.

Part of Nationwide Justice Department Initiative

Federal officials also noted that the case was prosecuted as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice. The initiative aims to target organized criminal activity, including drug trafficking networks and violent crime, while coordinating federal law enforcement resources to address threats affecting communities across the country. Officials said the operation focuses on dismantling criminal organizations and disrupting the distribution of narcotics and other illegal activities tied to larger criminal enterprises.
