Laredo Teacher Indicted on Child Porn Charges
A 41-year-old United ISD Teacher in Laredo, Texas has been charged with possession, receipt, and distribution of child pornography, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas on June 26, 2024.
On June 25, a federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment against Roberto Ortiz Jr. He is scheduled to appear for his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga on July 5 at 10:15 AM.
The case began on March 23, when law enforcement officials allegedly received four child pornography files from a Laredo IP address. The indictment claims this IP address was associated with Ortiz, who allegedly shared the files through a peer-to-peer (P2P) application.
Further investigation led to a search warrant executed at Ortiz’s residence on June 4. According to the charges, Ortiz provided authorities access to his computer and showed them where the downloaded content was saved. Authorities reportedly discovered several files containing child pornography, including the four files previously obtained by law enforcement.
Ortiz, a teacher at a high school, currently has no evidence linking his alleged activities to his employment.
If convicted, Ortiz faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible maximum fine of $250,000.
The FBI conducted the investigation with assistance from the Laredo Child Exploitation Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine A. Cortez is prosecuting the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. PSC brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children and to identify and rescue victims.
