Sugar Land Mail Carrier Arrested in Mail Theft Case Involving More Than 50 Victims

By

The Sugar Land Police Department, working with special agents from the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, arrested a mail carrier on charges of mail theft following a joint investigation. Authorities said the case involves more than 50 victims and addresses and is being treated as a first-degree felony. Investigators began looking into the matter after multiple reports of check forgeries were received over the past several months. Those reports prompted law enforcement to open an investigation into possible mail theft.

Surveillance Leads to Arrest

According to police, investigators identified a postal employee as a suspect during the inquiry. Authorities then conducted surveillance as part of the investigation. The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of Jeland Mouton on March 9, 2026. Officials say the arrest was the result of the joint effort between local police and federal postal investigators.

Mail Recovered During Investigation

Investigators said Mouton was found in possession of 226 pieces of mail addressed to more than 50 different individuals. Authorities reported that 66 of those items contained checks that could potentially be used to commit forgery. Officials stated the mail had not been opened. The mail was returned to the U.S. Postal Service so it could be delivered to the intended recipients.

Fraud Prevention Advice

Police also reminded residents to take precautions to protect themselves from check fraud. Authorities recommend regularly monitoring bank accounts when mailing checks in order to quickly identify unauthorized activity. Investigators say using gel pens can help prevent the chemical removal of ink from checks. Officials also suggest placing checks inside a folded piece of paper within the envelope to make them less visible.

Public Asked to Report Information

Authorities are encouraging residents to report information related to suspected mail theft or check forgery. Officials say tips can be submitted to Fort Bend Crime Stoppers. Investigators noted that community tips can assist in identifying additional suspects connected to similar incidents.

All individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in the court of law.
