Unveiling the Truth: 32 Jailers Hurt in Hays County Jail Use of Force
Recently released records have revealed a shocking truth about the Hays County Sheriff’s Office reporting to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS). An earlier report by the Houston Chronicle brought attention to the information submitted to TCJS, which highlighted the alarming number of use of force incidents resulting in injuries. Astonishingly, since January 2022, a total of 32 jailers have been injured in these incidents at the Hays County Jail.
As Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler has previously emphasized, the definition of “injury” encompasses various forms of physical harm, including pain, illness, and any impairment of physical condition. It is crucial that we prioritize the protection and support of our dedicated jailers to ensure a safer environment for all.
Hays County Jail Injury Overview:
- Between January 2022 and August 2023, 67% of the reports made to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards were related to officers injured.
- Only 33% of the reported injuries were related to inmates.
Hays County Jail Injuries By Month
The number of injuries sustained by both officers and inmates at the Hays County Jail varied. In January 2022, there were 2 injuries among officers and 1 injury among inmates. This increased to 3 injuries among officers and 2 injuries among inmates in February 2022. The number of injuries then dropped to 1 for both officers and inmates in March 2022. In April 2022, there were no reported injuries for either group. The pattern continued with fluctuations throughout the year, with peaks in July and August 2022, where officers sustained 5 and 7 injuries respectively, while inmates had 1 injury in July, but not in August.
In September 2022, there were no reported injuries for either group. In October 2022, officers experienced 1 injury while inmates had 2 injuries. November 2022 saw 1 injury among officers but no injuries among inmates. The number of injuries then spiked in December 2022, with 5 injuries among officers and no injuries among inmates. In January and February 2023, officers had 1 injury each month, with no injuries reported for inmates.
The pattern continued with fluctuations, including 1 injury among officers and 2 among inmates in March 2023. April 2023 saw no reported injuries for either group, followed by 1 injury for both officers and inmates in May 2023. In June and July 2023, there were no reported injuries for either group. Finally, in August 2023, officers sustained 2 injuries while inmates had 2 injuries.
Texas Commission on Jail Standards to Release 20 Complaints, 24 Still Under Investigation – Hays County Jail
In an ongoing, routine investigation process by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS), they are in process of releasing 20 out of the 44 complaints that were submitted to their office by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office. These complaints are part of a rigorous review process conducted by the TCJS to ensure compliance with jail standards and to address any issues that may arise.
The complaints to be released should shed light on various concerns and incidents within the Hays County Jail, providing an opportunity for transparency and accountability.
