Cameron County Jailer Arrested
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office posted on its official Facebook page, the following:
CAMERON COUNTY JAILER ARRESTED: On February 23, 2023, Cameron County Sheriff’s Investigators responded to the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center, in reference to an assault on a disabled inmate.
Upon arrival, the jailing staff notified the Investigators that Jailer Edward James Lee had assaulted a disabled inmate. While being assigned to the infirmary, Lee assaulted the inmate by striking him with closed fists several times on his facial area and by using his legs to force the inmate into the ground. At the time of the assault, the inmate was sitting down and covering his head.
After gathering all the evidence and witness statements, Investigators were able to gather enough probable cause and Lee was placed under arrest. Lee is being charged with INJURY TO DISABLED and OFFICIAL OPPRESSION.
Lee was booked into Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center. Investigation is ongoing.
Cameron County Jailer Magistrated
On February 24, 2023, the Jailer received magistration. He was magistrated for two allegations. The first was a Class A Misdemeanor, Official Oppression, Texas Penal Code 39.03(d). The second was a 2nd Degree Felony, Injury to a Child, Elderly Individual, or Disabled Individual, Texas Penal Code 22.04. He was also issued a “no contact” order. During magistration, the Jailer refused a court appointed attorney.
Low on Cameron County Jailers
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office is attempting to hire many jailers. The only issue may be the low wages compared to other professions in the area. The starting pay for a Cameron County Jailer is listed at $30,998 a year, or $14.91 an hour.
Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza has made the following statements in the past, as documented by ValleyCentral:
“Our detention officers and deputies are some of the most underpaid in the country and the commissioner’s court refuses to give them a pay raise,” Garza said in his press conference. “The lack of a liveable wage is causing our jail to be critically understaffed even with our effort to keep the inmate population down.”
“Due to the lack of detention officers, I had no choice but to eliminate the housing of federal inmates to remain in compliance and to keep the jail in operation,” said the sheriff.
