Bart Joseph Bond, an inmate at Comal County Jail, tragically died despite medical intervention. This incident has prompted a deeper investigation into jail operations and procedures. Additionally, concerns have been raised about inadequate medical care at the facility.

In-Custody Death at Comal County Jail: Bart Joseph Bond
On February 24, 2024, a tragic event unfolded at the Comal County Jail located in New Braunfels, TX, as detectives from the Comal County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and the Texas Rangers responded to an in-custody death report.
The deceased, identified as Bart Joseph Bond, was an inmate at the Comal County Jail. At approximately 2200 hours, jail staff found Bond sitting on his bed, hyperventilating, which was approximately one hour and fifteen minutes from the time he claimed he took his medication. Despite intervention from jail and medical personnel, Bond became unresponsive, prompting a call to 9-1-1. Firefighter/paramedics arrived on the scene and administered life-saving measures, but tragically pronounced Bond dead thirty-five minutes later.
Bond Complained to Jail Staff Prior to Passing
It was reported that Bond had complained of breathing difficulties, chest pain, right arm pain, and a head rash prior to the incident. Despite having undergone medical tests (x-ray, COVID test, and EKG) the day before, which yielded clear results, Bond’s condition rapidly deteriorated.
The 33-year-old inmate had a history of physical ailments, including asthma, and psychological conditions. He had been regularly monitored and had no known history of substance abuse or prior suicide attempts.
The scene of the incident, which initiated in a jail cell and concluded in a day room at the Comal County Jail, was documented. Bond was found lying in the doorway of his cell, and various items were observed within the cell. The report does not specify when the last time Bond was observed in his cell. It also does not specify if Bond requested any medical assistance since taking his medication and whether he was denied any treatments or care.
Bond, described as a Caucasian man with specific physical characteristics and tattoos, was found with medical tubes and devices in place, indicating the desperate attempts made to save his life. Despite these efforts, Bond’s life could not be preserved, and he was eventually transported to the Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home.
Comal County Claims No Foul Play in Jail Death
Authorities notified Bond’s next of kin, Brenda Bond, of his passing, and no signs of foul play or trauma were initially suspected. However, in light of the circumstances, Judge James Walker ordered a full autopsy to be conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.
This tragic incident has cast a somber light on the operations and procedures within the Comal County Jail, prompting a deeper investigation into the events leading up to Bart Joseph Bond’s untimely death.
Cannot Locate Press Release on Jail Death Issued in February 2024
It should be noted, we have been unable to find any press release issued by the Comal County Sheriff’s Office on this matter. It was not until the Comal County Sheriff’s Office submitted a report to the Texas Attorney General’s Office has this information been made available. In review of the report, we ponder the purpose of the Comal County Public Information Office.
Nothing noted in the report to the Texas Attorney General’s Office indicates information would have been missed or incorrect had the Comal County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release in February 2024. Much of what is listed in the report indicates observations at that time.
Former Inmate Claims Inadequate Medical Care at Comal County Jail
Also of interest may be the KSAT12 news story on December 20, 2023, depicting a claim of inadequate medical care being provided to another inmate housed there, which resulted in the death of a baby. That incident lead to a civil rights lawsuit being filed.
