DPS Seizes Nearly 2,000 Pounds of Meth During South Texas Traffic Stop

By

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced that troopers seized nearly 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine during a commercial vehicle traffic stop connected to Operation Lone Star earlier this week in South Texas.

Traffic Stop Leads to Major Drug Discovery

According to DPS officials, the seizure occurred Wednesday, March 4, 2026, shortly after 3:30 p.m. when a DPS trooper stopped a blue 2020 Kenworth tractor-trailer for a traffic violation along U.S. Highway 281 near George West in Live Oak County. During the stop, the trooper reportedly observed indicators of possible criminal activity, prompting additional investigation. Authorities called in a K-9 unit from the Live Oak County Sheriff’s Office, whose narcotics detection dog alerted to the trailer.

Drugs Hidden in False Floor

Following the alert, troopers and special agents with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) of the Texas Department of Public Safety searched the trailer. Investigators located 479 black tape-wrapped bundles of methamphetamine concealed inside a false floor compartment beneath the trailer. Authorities said the narcotics weighed approximately 1,980 pounds and carried an estimated street value of $3.4 million. Officials said the drugs were allegedly being transported to Dallas.

Driver Arrested

The driver of the truck, Diego Mendez, 32, of Alton, was arrested at the scene. Mendez was charged with possession of a controlled substance over 400 grams, a first-degree felony under Texas law, and was booked into the Live Oak County Jail.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials say the case remains under investigation by DPS CID. Mendez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
