Flatonia ISD Explains Why Campus Was Not Locked Down After Weapon Report

By

Flatonia Independent School District issued a public statement after receiving a report alleging that a student possessed a weapon, a disclosure that prompted concern among parents and community members. The district’s social media post confirmed that Superintendent Chris Sodek immediately contacted law enforcement and initiated an investigation. Officials later stated that authorities determined the item involved was a BB gun and that student and staff safety was ensured.

The district cited federal and state student confidentiality laws as the reason no additional information could be released. Administrators also stated that the most severe action available under Texas law was invoked to address the matter. While questions remain among parents, district officials say the response was shaped by the timing of when information became known.

Where the District Is Located

Flatonia Independent School District is located in Flatonia, a small city in Fayette County along U.S. Highway 90. The community sits roughly midway between San Antonio and Houston. The district is classified as a 2A school under University Interscholastic League standards, placing it among the smaller school districts in the state.

In a community of this size, schools are closely connected to residents, and incidents involving campus safety tend to draw immediate attention. District officials say that dynamic makes transparency important, while also increasing the risk that releasing too much detail could identify a student.

What Was Known When the District Was Alerted

According to Sodek, when the district was first notified of the concern, administrators did not yet know what type of gun was involved. By the time the report reached district administration, the student connected to the incident was no longer on campus. That distinction, Sodek said, is critical to understanding how the situation was handled.

Administrators immediately knew the student was not on campus at the time the report was received. District officials also knew where the student was located once the incident was reported, allowing law enforcement and administrators to assess the situation without uncertainty about the student’s whereabouts.

Why a Lockdown Was Not Implemented

Sodek explained that a lockdown cannot be initiated based on information that administrators do not yet have. At the moment the district became aware of the report, the student was already off campus, and there was no indication of an active situation occurring on school grounds. Once administrators confirmed the student’s location, there was no basis to conclude that students or staff were facing an immediate threat on campus.

The decision not to initiate a lockdown was therefore tied to the timing of when information became known, not to hindsight after the investigation concluded. District officials emphasized that lockdowns are situational responses to active threats, and in this case, administrators were informed only after the student had left campus.

Notification and Privacy Concerns

Although no lockdown occurred, Flatonia ISD chose to notify the public about the incident. In its statement, the district cited student confidentiality laws as limiting what could be shared beyond the basic facts. In a small district, officials said, even limited additional detail could easily lead to identification of the student involved.

Campus Security and Law Enforcement Involvement

Flatonia ISD previously employed a school resource officer through a contractual arrangement with the Flatonia Police Department, but the officer resigned and the position went unfilled. The district now uses campus guardians and maintains coordination with local and state law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement was contacted immediately after the report was received and assisted in assessing the situation.

Sodek said officers are regularly seen on or around district campuses, even without a permanently assigned resource officer. He stated that cooperation with law enforcement remains a key part of the district’s safety planning.
