In a recent YouTube video, civil rights attorney and retired Army First Sergeant C.J. Grisham exposed a brewing legal dispute with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office over his right to carry a firearm inside the Bexar County Courthouse. Grisham, a retired federal law enforcement officer, previously had an arrangement with the sheriff’s office allowing him to carry his firearm in the courthouse. However, tensions flared after Grisham received a badge for courthouse access, prompting officials to block his entry with a weapon.
The video, posted by Grisham around November 1, 2024, documents a tense exchange with two deputies who informed him he was prohibited from entering the facility with his firearm. During the conversation, one deputy attributed the order to a higher authority, potentially a lieutenant or chief, suggesting an internal decision to restrict Grisham’s courthouse access while armed.
Throughout the video, Grisham challenges this directive, questioning the deputies as he witnesses other individuals, identified as district attorney law enforcement officers, entering the building with weapons. Grisham points to Texas penal code 46.15(a)(5), which he interprets as granting him the right to carry his firearm in certain government facilities as a qualified retired law enforcement officer. The provision exempts honorably retired officers with proper identification and proficiency certification from specific restrictions outlined in penal code 46.03, which generally bans weapons in courthouses.
In response to this incident, Grisham has taken a legal stance, filing a four-page demand letter to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, calling on the sheriff’s office to comply with state law. He also mentioned plans to file an injunction or lawsuit to challenge the restriction formally.
Grisham’s legal advocacy is rooted in his personal experiences and extensive background. A decorated veteran and former Senior Counterintelligence Special Agent, Grisham transitioned to civil rights law after earning his law degrees. He now specializes in cases involving alleged violations of First and Second Amendment rights, providing affordable legal representation to individuals who cannot otherwise access justice.
On his LinkedIn profile, Grisham describes himself as “tenacious, focused, diligent, unwavering, and proactive in defending [his] clients.” His approach to civil rights is informed by his military experience and dedication to constitutional principles, underscoring his commitment to hold authorities accountable. As he pursues this latest dispute with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Grisham’s case could spotlight broader issues surrounding gun rights, civil liberties, and law enforcement transparency within Texas courthouses.
