As previously indicated, Higgins stated he decided to run due to influence of at least one Judge. It turns out, County Court at Law 1 Judge Robert Updegrove son may have donating to the Democratic candidates campaign.

Judge Updegrove, whom is in competition with a Democratic candidate for the office he is the incumbent, son donated $250 on June 21, 2021, to Kelly Higgins.

Democratic candidate Jimmy Alan Hall, is the challenger to Updegrove. His campaign page can be found here. He previously ran for Hays County Commissioner for Precinct 3. He lost by a very narrow margin and has previously answered questions from the Community Impact on his belief system during his 2018 campaign.

Per Balltopedia, Upgrove defeated Democrat Anna Martinez Bolling in the general election by obtaining 55.6% of the vote in 2010. He has held the office since. In 2014 he had no competition to his re-election.

Per Judge Updegrove campaign webpage, as of September 15, 2022, he has not listed any endorsements to his re-election.

It appears the last time Updegrove had competition for the office, the race was very close. Also, as one may remember, and reported by the Hays Free Press, a Democratic Judge filed for injunction relief on Updegrove and Judge Chris Johnson (Court at Law 2) before Judge Thompson decided to step down from her role.
