Kristen Hoyt has been appointed Comal County Judge following a unanimous vote by the Comal County Commissioners Court. The appointment took effect immediately, and Hoyt was sworn into office by District Judge Gary Steel. The vote fills the vacancy left after the recent death of longtime County Judge Sherman Krause. Hoyt now assumes the role of presiding officer of Commissioners Court and will help guide policy decisions and administrative leadership for one of the fastest-growing counties in Texas.

Recent Primary Victory
Hoyt previously served as the Comal County Tax Assessor-Collector and was the Republican primary winner in the March 3, 2026, primary election. She currently does not have an opponent on the ballot for the November general election. Her appointment by Commissioners Court allows the position to be filled immediately rather than remaining vacant until the election cycle concludes. The move provides continuity in county leadership during a time of continued population growth and expanding county services.
Hoyt Addresses the Community
Following her appointment, Hoyt thanked county leaders and residents for their confidence in her leadership. “I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me,” Hoyt said. “I do not take it lightly, and I will not let you down.” She added that she intends to represent the entire community in the role, saying, “While this election delivered a clear mandate, I want to be equally clear about something else. I will serve as county judge for every citizen of Comal County. The office belongs to the people, and I intend to honor that.”
Remembering Judge Sherman Krause
Hoyt steps into the role following the passing of longtime Comal County Judge Sherman Krause. On February 7, 2026, county officials announced that Krause had passed away at his home earlier that morning. Krause had served the citizens of Comal County since taking office on January 1, 2011, becoming a steady presence in county government for more than a decade. His tenure included years of growth and development throughout the county as the region continued to expand.
County officials said Krause’s passing was deeply felt throughout county government and the community he served. In the announcement made following his death, the county described Krause as a respected leader and mentor to many. “Our Comal County family is devastated by this loss,” the county said in a statement. “Judge Krause was more than a leader. He was a colleague, a mentor, and a friend to many.”
