The Texas Department of Public Safety is urging residents across the state to use the iWatchTexas program to report suspicious activity in their schools and communities. DPS officials describe the program as a preventive public-safety tool that allows individuals to share information about behaviors that may indicate criminal, terroristic, or school safety-related threats. The agency emphasizes that early reporting can help law enforcement identify and address potential risks before they escalate into violence or other criminal acts.
According to DPS, many preparations for crimes or threats are often observed by someone but go unreported. The agency encourages Texans to speak up when they see concerning behavior, even if they are unsure whether it rises to the level of criminal activity. When in doubt, DPS advises residents to make a report so trained analysts can review the information.
Multiple Reporting Options Available
Reports can be submitted through the iWatchTexas mobile application, online at www.iwatchtx.org, or by calling 1-844-643-2251. DPS states that filing a report typically takes less than five minutes. Once submitted, each tip is reviewed by law enforcement analysts who evaluate the information and determine appropriate follow-up action.
All reports are confidential. Individuals may choose to remain anonymous, although providing contact information is optional and allows analysts to follow up if additional details are needed. The iWatchTexas app is available at no cost through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Examples of Reportable Activity
DPS provided several examples of behaviors and activities that may warrant a report through iWatchTexas. These include comments about killing or harming someone, strangers asking detailed questions about building security features, and social media posts referencing potential school attacks. The agency also encourages reporting accounts that promote vandalism, sabotage, or arson.
Other examples include individuals requesting sensitive information such as blueprints or security plans without a legitimate reason, purchasing materials that could be used to construct weapons without proper credentials, and photographing or recording security infrastructure such as cameras or checkpoints. DPS notes that these behaviors, when viewed collectively or in context, may indicate planning activity.
Not a Replacement for 911
DPS stresses that iWatchTexas is not designed to handle emergencies. Situations requiring an immediate response should be reported by calling 911. The program is intended to serve as a reporting mechanism for suspicious or concerning activity that may not require urgent law enforcement intervention but could present a future threat.
Officials are encouraging Texans to download the app and familiarize themselves with the reporting process, stating that public participation plays a key role in maintaining safety across the state.
